In this Healthcare Basics video, we’re going
cover how to build the layout of your facility, from floor plans to staff and resources.
Ideally, your model will start with an AutoCAD drawing of your facility’s floor plan. Floor
plans are an important guide for placing objects as accurately as possible, and FlexSim accepts
all sorts of files for the task, including popular AutoCAD and image formats. If you
don’t have access to a drawing of your floor plan, you can always take measurements and
use the Wall object to mark off the layout. To import the drawing, click the Floor Plans
button in the toolbar, and then “Add a floor plan”. Select which type of file you wish
to use, and then browse for that file. If you’re using a CAD file, you have the ability
to customize which layers are visible and what color those layers are represented with.
FlexSim HC measures space in meters, so you might need to scale your floor plans to fit.
Each of the settings here is explained in detail in the User Manual. In addition, it’s
usually a good idea keep the box checked to “Make drawing non-selectable”, which will
keep you from accidentally moving the floor plan. Click finish to complete the import.
If you even need to make adjustments to the floor plan later, you can find it in the Toolbox.
To add staff, resources and locations, we’ll turn to the Library in the left pane. Objects
in the Library are broken down into five general categories: Patient Locations, Resource Groups,
Item Objects, Infrastructure, and Visual Objects. For now, we’re primarily concerned with the
first three. Patient Locations are the objects that patients interact with in the model,
such as entrance doors, waiting rooms, and exam tables. Patients will use or interact
with Resource Groups. These mobile objects can be staff, medical equipment, transportation
items, and more. Item Objects are a little different � they transport or process items
that play a role in a patient’s treatment. Items can represent paperwork, test samples,
and more. To add objects into the model, click any icon
in the Library. Most icons will have a menu that will open, showing a variety of object
choices. Click the one you would like to add � your mouse pointer will change to the
Add Object icon to indicate that you are in Add Objects mode. Click in your model to add
the object, and as long you remain in Add Objects mode, you can continue to click in
the model to add more of that object. Turn off Add Objects mode by pressing the ESCAPE
key or right-clicking in the model. Don’t worry about placing objects exactly when you
add them � we can easily move the objects later.
To manipulate an object that has been place in the model, simply left-click it with your
mouse. A yellow box and colored cones will appear around the object. Left-click the object
and drag to move the object around the model. If you want to object to be higher or lower
relative to the floor, either use the mouse’s scroll wheel or click and drag using both
mouse buttons. As for the cones, they make resizing and rotation a snap. Left-click and
drag the cones to increase or decrease the object’s size in that direction. Right-click
and drag the cones to rotate the object along the axis that runs through that cone. If you
need fine-tuned control over position, rotation, and size, simply look at the Quick Properties
for that object, where you can specify exactly values for each. And if you decide you want
the object to have a different shape or color, these can be changed in the same area of the
Quick Properties. Want to pick a color quickly? Use the eyedropper-shaped Sampler and click
anywhere in FlexSim HC to select that particular color for your object.
Finally, let’s discuss the difference between resources and groups. When I drag a staff
resource into the model, you can see the staff member as well as a square underneath. We
actually haven’t dragged out a single staff member � we’ve created a staff group, which
is represented by that colored square. By clicking it, you can edit properties of the
group: the group name, how many total members are in the group, and more. If you add members,
more staff resources will be added to that particular staff group. This goes for any
of the resource groups found in the Library. So what’s the benefit of a group? In many
cases, it’s not necessary for a specific staff member to be assigned to a specific patient.
We can simply assign a physician group or nurse group to a particular patient process;
when a patient needs assistance during that step, the first available member of the group
will arrive. That doesn’t mean that you can’t assign a
specific member of the staff, or that staff resources all need to be clones within a specific
group. Each member can be clicked and highlighted to reveal their own properties, which will
allow you to specify their physical appearance, clothing, and accessories to add an extra
element of realism to your model. You can even add a walking speed, skill level, and
pay rate for each member � if they make sense in your simulation project.
