Hi. My name is Veronica Lombo. And today, I’m going to talk about affirmations. Affirmations are statements that you can say to yourself and repeat, kind of like a mantra, to help change your thought pattern from negative to positive. When I’m depressed, the negative thought patterns that go through my mind are: “I’m alone.” “I’m not ready.” “I hate myself.” “That person doesn’t love me.” And affirmations really help to get me out of that storm into a clearer frame of mind. My number 1 affirmation is: “Self-care is not a side hustle.” Taking care of yourself is not a selfish thing. In order to care for the people that you love and be of service to them, and live your best life, you have to be able to pour from a full glass. You have to take care of yourself. Number 2: “I’m doing the best I can with what I have.” A lot of times, we can get down on ourselves. “Why did I not do this?” “Why am I not able to do this?” and “Why did I do that?” “Why did I make that decision?” At each moment in time, you’re doing the best you can with what you have and the knowledge you have. Remember that. Number 3: “I am the only person living my life.” This was a really important one for
me. In my late 20s, I went through a lot of
changes and I had to remind myself that I was the only person living my life; not my siblings, not my parents, not my partner. You have to understand that you are the only person that has the power to make changes in your life. Remember these affirmations. I like to write them down in my daily planner. I also like to put notifications in my phone. Sometimes, I’ll put it on a post-it note and just put it in my bathroom or a place where I can see it. And the more that you see that affirmation, the more you’ll be able to actually believe it, think it and, eventually, live it.
