Can mental illness be contagious and why? Mental illness tends not to be contagious, in the sense that you can’t catch it off somebody. But, sometimes if someone’s sad and they’re feeling very… unwell, people around them can be affected by it. So, it makes them feel sad or it affects them in some way, but it doesn’t… you don’t catch the illness off them. So, when you said “sad”… um, but sometimes, what people do is not sad is it? It’s… It can be very confused, or sometimes it can be very angry. And… Or it can be kind of having ideas which are scary or really quite unpleasant. Can that have an affect on the child? It can certainly have an affect, cause you can feel scared of someone who you feel is getting angry for no reason. You can sometimes think, I’m talking to my mum or dad and they don’t seem to be listening to me. And that’s… that has an affect on somebody, because you’re just saying “why aren’t they talking to me?” “What’s wrong?” and the answers aren’t necessarily coming through from the person that you most want them from, it’s usually your parent. Sometimes, if you can hear someone, like… If they get ill at night or something, um and… they’re really happy in the middle of the night and then you get woken up by them, and then you don’t get any sleep, and then when you’re at school you might… that might affect your work. That’s what has happened to me a few times. (Offscreen) So you can see how, catching mental illness is not just catching it. As in from your mother to your father its also the things that happen in that environment. Do you… Do you understand that? So, it’s like, what’s happening around you. When you meant by the environment? (Offscreen) Yes. As a result of that, you know, that particular parent having a mental illness. What they do and what happens as a result of that can also affect you.
